Housing Rights Of Disabled Animal Guardians

The PAWS/LA Housing Education Department is dedicated to ensuring that disabled animal guardians are aware of their rights to housing and public accommodation of their service animal.

The role of Assistive Animals in today’s society has significantly evolved and diversified.  What was once narrowly defined as “seeing eye dogs” is now legally defined as those animals that provide a broad array of assistance. Descriptions now include animals providing seizure alert, hearing assistance, visual aid and psychiatric or emotional support.

Clearly, Assistive Animals encompass a diverse range of abilities, training and acuity to assist individuals living with a variety of disabilities.  Because of their importance to improving the lives of people living with disabilities, Assistive Animals and their guardians now enjoy legal status which exempts them from ordinary “pet-related accommodation regulations.”
