Favorite Feline Past-times
by Brooke White | LA Pet Sitting
Cats are currently the most popular pet in the world and are found almost everywhere on earth, so it may be useful to most everyone to know what sort of activities they enjoy. At the top of the list is sleeping! The average length of time a cat sleeps per day is 13-14 hours, but up to 20 is not unheard of. During sleep, cats experience rapid eye movement and muscle twitching while dreaming.
Grooming is a big part of a cat’s daily activities, but excessive grooming may be a sign of stress. Normal grooming should occupy about 1/3 of the time each day that a cat is not sleeping. Excessive grooming is an unconscious habit, like nail-biting in humans, and can result in bald spots or open sores. Unpleasant tasting topical sprays and calming remedies can help.
Cats tend to prefer many small meals throughout each day. Domesticated cats, who don’t need to hunt, still enjoy playful activities that mimic hunting. They even tend to play more when hungry and prefer new toys over ones they have played with before. Most cats enjoy sitting in high places, allowing a good observation point to survey the territory, concealed from potential prey. Fortunately, cats possess a “righting reflex” that allows them to reflexively twist into a position to land on their feet.
