As a non-profit agency we rely heavily on the kindness of individuals and companies for donations of everything from money to pet food and products.

We are very fortunate to be the beneficiary of wonderful partnerships with several Los Angeles-area PetCo stores. Each of these stores has generously selected PAWS/LA as the recipient of the food and items placed in their in-store donation bins.

These donations amount to hundreds of pounds of essential pet food each month which we distribute to the dogs and cats of our PAWS/LA clients. These donations are an amazing gift and allow us to stretch our budget dollars even further to help more pets and people in need.

We would like to express our deep appreciation to all of our friends at the PetCo stores listed below and hope that you will stop in if they are in your neighborhood.

It would be difficult to find a more enthusiastic or optimistic staffer at PAWS/LA than Omar Olivares, Client Services Assistant. Omar came to PAWS/LA in February, 2011 and immediately began making an impression on both clients and staff alike. His unfailingly friendly and happy attitude is a gentle balm to the clients who are seeking help for their animal companions.

Prior to coming to PAWS/LA, Omar worked for three years at Laurel Pet Hospital in West Hollywood. His formal duties revolved around customer service; but in reality, he “did everything except being a doctor.” Omar’s love for animals began when he was a little boy. He was the child who always brought home the stray kitten or lost dog and begged his parents to be allowed to keep them. His grandmother taught him that animals are just like people, and should be treated accordingly. A huge animal lover herself, his grandmother made sure that Omar had plenty of exposure to animal companions. He spent a great deal of time with her six dogs, and her many, many canaries. As an adult, Omar has two four-legged family members: Pablo, a male Chihuahua and Peaches, a female Chihuahua. As Omar says, they are the light of his life.

As far as Omar is concerned, there is no organization quite like PAWS/LA. Having experienced growing up with financial difficulties, Omar can readily identify with the needs and concerns of our clients. He is pleased that he and PAWS/LA are in a position to help them through difficult times and enable a light to be seen at the end of a dark tunnel. Because of his interaction with the clients, he believes he has become a more patient, more understanding man. The one-on-one interaction he has with the clients makes his job personally gratifying.

Working with PAWS/LA has made Omar more appreciative of the blessings in his own life. He is gratified that he is in a position to offer a helping hand to those who are having difficulties and see that the animal companions who are so important to their well-being are given the best possible care. When asked what PAWS/LA means to him, he replied, “When there is no life-line and someone is down on their luck with nowhere to turn, PAWS/LA is there.”

PAWS/LA friend and Downtown L.A. artist-extraordinaire, Andre Miripolsky, recently brought his pop-art style to our agency headquarters. With his flare for color and his passion for bringing life to the streets of downtown Los Angeles, Andre applied his brush to create a dynamic, cheery, welcoming entrance to PAWS/LA. Once hidden in a bland doorway on Hope Street, PAWS/LA’s front entrance now demands attention from passersby.

Paris-born painter and sculptor whose motto is “Fear No Art”, Miripolsky is perhaps best known for his work with Absolut Vodka in the 1990s, when he designed a colorful bottle for an ad campaign, he has also created album covers, costumes for rock stars and even painted a basketball court for an MTV special.

More recently, Andre has dedicated himself to creating intricately clever murals and public art projects. He has just completed Phase 1 of the artistic facelift for the Museum of Monterey. He is also responsible for creating much of the imagery associated with Downtown (Los Angeles) Business Improvement District.

Meet Andre and see more of his work at Art Share’s “Downtown Legends” gallery show. Each of the five selected artists have been creating art for more than 30 years, and are either Downtown Arts District or Brewery Arts Colony residents. All have been featured in museums, four have had large scale public art commissions, four have shown internationally, three have been on billboards, and all are giving back to the community either through volunteering on boards, teaching art, creating a forum for art through the written word, or otherwise enabling others to find their own unique artistic talents.

The show, located at 801 East 4th Place at the corner of Hewitt, Los Angeles CA 90013 runs through August 4, 2011.

On Sunday March 13, 2011, PAWS/LA participated in Woofstock 90210 in Beverly Hills.

PAWS/LA raised community awareness for its services with a volunteer booth generously donated by event producers, Mary Ruth Koogler and Cindy Brynan. Raymundo Baltazar Volunteer/Outreach Coordinator spear headed PAWS/LA’s visibility joined by volunteers Corrine Corry, Judy French, Debby Dykes and Laura Foster for the day of fun and festivities.

*The pet-friendly event gives dog owners and their canine companions the opportunity to get out and mingle with other dogs and their owners, according to senior recreation supervisor Cindy Brynan, one of the event’s organizers.

“We have a lot of dog lovers here in Beverly Hills, but no dog park,” Brynan said. “Events like this get the community out with their pets so that two and four-legged friends can meet.”

A pet parade gave the most trend-setting dogs a chance to strut their stuff, with awards presented in three categories.

Miss Coco Puff, a Chiweenie—half Chihuahua and half dachshund—dressed casually in designer jean overalls and a pink sweater with matching pink accessories, including high tops, a necklace and sunglasses. The fashionable pooch took home the award for Best BH Bling, while Sharon Powell’s dog, Teddie, won for the Most Hippie-like outfit. Tall, blonde Lynn Griffith and her tall, blond Australian shepherd, Ricky, won for Most Owner-Pet Look-Alikes.

With almost 50 vendors offering such items as T-shirts and faux fur coats, even dogs that didn’t arrive in their Sunday best had plenty of outfit options to choose from that were available for purchase during the event.

Many vendors offered healthy food options for dogs, while one sold bottles of Bowser Beer, a nonalcoholic beer for dogs who like to walk on the wild side. Of course, each bottle includes a warning for dogs to drink responsibly.Entertainment for the event was provided by Muttley Crew, which featured fast running agility dogs maneuvering through an obstacle course and high flying disc dogs jumping into the air to catch Frisbee-type disks.

“We call it Muttley Crew because we have all kinds of dogs in our show, from a papillon to a Great Dane,” said owner Chris Cabral. “Plus, 90 percent of our dogs are from shelters.”

Woofstock 90210 was a fabulous time for people and their four legged friends!

We wanted to share an update from Ralph:

“Zoey and Felix have settled in after their first month in Long Beach.

As you can see from the photos – they still are sticking close together.

They both are incredibly sweet and loving – soaking up all of the attention

I can give them.

Felix is particularly affectionate. He loves to sleep on my chest – especially

when I am stretched out on the sofa watching TV in the evening.

They are still exploring every corner of the apartment. They also seem

particularly fascinated with what is going on outside the security door or the

windows (although they run at the slightest hint of movement).

I am really amazed at how well Zoey and Felix have adapted to their new home -

with me (a male) as a roommate.

So far – so good – although they might like equal time for a response.

Thanks to Steve and Pam for making this transition happen so quickly.

I will keep you updated on Zoey and Felix.”
